What is

Pilates?

Pilates is a method of therapeutic exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He originally called his method “Contrology.” Pilates was a pioneer in the areas of fitness and physical therapy. He designed a variety of specialized equipment to facilitate the development of proper joint alignment, muscular strength and flexibility.

With an emphasis on breathing as a fundamental principle, Pilates increases circulation, oxygenation of the blood, and a healthy core. Additionally, this method of exercise facilitates neurological re-patterning and promotes coordination, balance and body awareness.

According to Joseph Pilates, “Contrology is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.”

  • “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.”

    Joseph Pilates

  • “Physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.”

    Joseph Pilates

  • “Contrology is complete coordination of body, mind and spirit…. Not mind or body, but mind and body.”

    Joseph Pilates

  • The core principles of Pilates are: breath, centering, concentration, control, flow, precision and uniform development.
